Bourbon and Rye Whiskey for Women
Wednesday, March 21, 2018 – 7:00-8:00 p.m.
If you think whiskey and rye are “men-only” spirits, you’re in for a big surprise! Whiskey for Women author, and whiskey lover, Meghan Leary is the guest presenter for our first-ever “Ladies Night Out” whiskey and rye class. Meghan is the definitive authority on why the sophistication and complexity of women’s palates are perfectly suited to the sultry aromas and smooth flavors of bourbon and rye.
Let’s face it… Because bourbon and rye whiskeys are thought of as considerably robust, strong-flavored spirits, many women tend to shy away from them and stick to gin and vodka when ordering cocktails. We think it’s time for a change and invite you to join us for an evening of “brown spirits” education and tasting of deliciously smooth bourbons and ryes. Here are the spirits she’ll be talking about and will be tasted:
Pikesville Rye 110°
Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey refuses to be forgotten. First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, the brand, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by prohibition.
Rittenhouse Rye Whisky Bottled-In-Bond 100 Proof
“The aromas of the rye are filled with campfire-roasted marshmallows and baking spices. The whiskey is a little spicy-hot, but the notes of brown butter, burnt sugar, and dried fruits help to tame the fire. The finish lingers on your palate with maple syrup and honeysuckle.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points – July 2016 Ultimate Beverage Challenge 93 points – April 2014
Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey 90 Proof
Mildly sweet aroma with hints of vanilla and honey. The palate displays notes of toffee, berries and spice with fresh mint. The finish exhibits soft, toasted oak. Ultimate Beverage Challenge 94 points – March 2017
Henry Mckenna Bourbon Single Barrel 10 Year 100 Proof
Warm golden amber in color with aromas of vanilla, caramel, oak and a light herbaceous note. Enjoy flavors of smooth oak, sharp spices, honey and sweetness. The finish is long, sweet and spicy.
Whisky Advocate 90 points – May 2017 Ultimate Beverage Challenge 92 points – March 2015
Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon 1783 94 Proof
Burnished copper in color with aromas that are delightfully complex with flavors of vanilla bean, sweet fruit and fresh mint. The taste is
smooth and warm, pleasantly woody with accents of spice, smooth and nutmeg. The finish is long, sweet and slightly toasty.
If you are ready for a mid-week ladies night out, text your BFF and invite her to join you. Of course, guys are welcome to participate, too.
